The Story
Common name: Jade Plant ‘Hulk’
Latin name: Crassula ovata ‘Hulk’ (often sold as Crassula ‘Hulk’ Supure)
Best position in the home: Prefers a bright spot with plenty of light, including direct sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal. Good light helps maintain its compact shape and rich green colour.
Water requirements: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially in winter. As a succulent, it stores water in its thick leaves and prefers drier conditions. Does not require high humidity.
Home impact: With its thick, glossy leaves and sturdy, tree-like shape, this plant adds a bold, sculptural look to interiors. It’s often associated with good luck and prosperity. Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets.
Potential height at full growth: Typically grows to around 30–60cm indoors, but can become larger over time with the right conditions.
How to look after it: Place in a bright, sunny position and use a free-draining cactus or succulent compost. Water only when the soil is completely dry. Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertiliser. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Repot every few years as it grows.
Beginner friendliness 5/5
Practically Thrives on Neglect! A very easy-care plant that’s perfect for beginners or anyone who prefers a low-maintenance option. As long as it gets enough light and isn’t overwatered, it will thrive.
Crassula plants are slow-growing but long-lived, and can develop a woody, bonsai-like appearance over time. Leaves may drop if overwatered, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.
