The Story
Common name: Tradescantia ‘Pink Paradise’
Latin name: Tradescantia ‘Pink Paradise’
Best position in the home: Thrives in bright, indirect light. The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more vibrant the pink colouring will be. Avoid low light, as this can cause the colours to fade. Perfect for shelves, hanging pots, or windowsills.
Water requirements: Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Keep the compost lightly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in winter. Prefers average household humidity but will appreciate occasional misting in drier conditions.
Home impact: With its striking pink, green, and sometimes cream-toned foliage, this plant adds a bold splash of colour and a slightly wild, trailing look to interiors. Ideal for brightening up shelves or creating a cascading display. Generally considered mildly toxic if ingested, so best kept out of reach of pets.
Potential height at full growth: Typically grows to around 15–30cm in height, but trails can reach 60cm or more.
How to look after it: Place in bright, indirect light to maintain strong colour. Water regularly but allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Use a well-draining houseplant compost. Feed monthly during spring and summer. Trim regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Easy to propagate from cuttings.
Beginner friendliness 4/5
Easy Going! Tradescantia is fast-growing and forgiving, making it great for beginners. It responds well to regular trimming and isn’t too fussy, as long as it gets enough light.
This plant can become leggy over time, so regular pruning helps keep it full and compact. It’s also one of the easiest plants to propagate, making it perfect for sharing or expanding your indoor jungle.
